In a demonstration of amazing bravery and resilience, Indian Army forces carried out a daring rescue effort in Kerala's Wayanad district, which a series of deadly landslides had decimated. The disaster has killed at least 132 people and injured over 200 others, and the death toll is anticipated to grow as rescuers comb through the rubble.
On Wednesday, based on information from forest officials and local villagers, the 122 Infantry Battalion (Territorial Army) MADRAS, led by Sub Gijil, Sub Jayesh, and Nb Sub Anilkumar, along with 12 jawans, embarked on a difficult mission to rescue 19 civilians stranded at the Ela Resort and Vana Rani Resort, located beyond the landslide-hit Mundakkai village.
The rescue mission was beset with difficulties, including a flooded river that rendered typical evacuation methods impossible. With extraordinary innovation and courage, the soldiers used ropes to build a human bridge, ensuring the safe evacuation of all inhabitants to Chooralmala.
A Defence PRO described the heroics, emphasising the soldiers' fast thinking and determination in life-threatening situations. The accomplishment of this mission demonstrates the Indian Army's commitment and skill in responding to natural calamities while protecting civilian lives.
Earlier on Wednesday morning, soldiers from the 122 Infantry Battalion found two dead from the debris in Mundakkai village. These bodies have been transferred to civilian hospitals for further processing.
As rescue attempts continue, the true scope of the disaster remains unknown. The community and state and federal officials are optimistic about further rescues and a gradual return to routine.
The Indian Army's prompt and successful response in Wayanad demonstrates their readiness and determination to serve the nation, even under the most difficult conditions.
